2024 F1 standings: McLaren outpacing Red Bull

- The recent Dutch Grand Prix marks 15 rounds into the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship
- Max Verstappen leads the 2024 F1 Drivers’ Championship standings
- Red Bull Racing leads the 2024 F1 Constructors’ Championship standings
The 15th round of the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship got underway on Sunday with the Dutch Grand Prix, held on the banked track of the historic Circuit Zandvoort on the Netherlands’ North Sea coast.
McLaren’s Lando Norris was the driver to beat, with strong pace throughout the weekend cementing him the win with almost 23 seconds separating him from Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen, the runner-up.
McLaren’s Oscar Piastri was also quick, though he just missed out on podium finish by two seconds. Norris now has two wins under his belt this season, while Piastri has one. Their strong performance also means McLaren has well and truly overtaken Ferrari as the team putting up the best fight against leader Red Bull.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc is third in the standings but he and his team’s mixed performance means he isn’t likely to catch up with Verstappen. Leclerc has manged one win this season, equaling the number of his teammate, Carlos Sainz, who will join Williams next season. Sainz will be replaced at the Prancing Horse by Mercedes-Benz AMG’s Lewis Hamilton.
Mercedes is also a team with mixed performance this season. Hamilton and teammate George Russell have finished strongly in recent rounds, ending their performance drought of the start of the current season and in the previous few seasons, though both didn’t have the pace at the last round in the Netherlands.
A standout driver this season and future great is Oliver Bearman, a Ferrari reserve who managed six points in his debut at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. Bearman filled in for Sainz who was away for surgery, and his impressive performance has won him a seat with Haas in 2025. He will be joined at the American squad by Esteban Ocon, who leaves Alpine at the end of the current season. They replace current Haas duo Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hülkenberg. Magnussen is currently without a seat for next season while Hülkenberg is set to join Sauber which will become Audi in 2026.
Verstappen is still the favorite to take home the Drivers’ title this season, which will be his fourth, though his performance gap with Norris isn’t as big as it used to be, as witnessed in recent races. Fellow Red Bull driver Sergio Perez continues to deliver a mixed performance and as a result remains well off the pace of his teammate.
There’s still some time for teams to make further changes and for Norris at least to catch up with current leader Verstappen, as there are still 10 races to go in the season.
