LS Swap into a 1985 C10: Budget Build Series Part 1

The square-body Chevy C10 has become one of the most popular trucks in the custom scene — and for good reason. They’re plentiful, affordable, parts are everywhere, and they look incredible with a modern drivetrain. This is Part 1 of our budget LS swap series following a local ArkLaTex builder’s journey.

The Donor Truck

Our builder sourced a solid 1985 C10 Silverado with surface rust but no major body damage for $2,800. The original 305 ran but smoked, making it a perfect candidate for the engine bay transplant.

The Engine

A 5.3L LM7 from a 2003 Suburban — the most common and affordable LS variant — was sourced from a local salvage yard for $650 with 142,000 miles. These engines routinely run past 250,000 miles, making them excellent swap candidates.
