Hurricane Evacuation Car Checklist for Louisiana and East Texas Drivers
A hurricane evacuation can turn a normal drive from Lake Charles, Beaumont, Houston or the Louisiana coast into hours of stop-and-go traffic. Heat, idling, heavy cargo and limited fuel availability all place extra demands on a vehicle.
That is why hurricane preparation should include more than tossing bottled water in the back seat. A roadworthy vehicle, a written route plan and a deliberately packed emergency kit can prevent a manageable evacuation from becoming a roadside crisis.
The National Weather Service recommends planning multiple routes, preparing supplies for at least three days, keeping phones charged and filling or charging the vehicle before a storm threatens. Those basics become even more important on Gulf Coast evacuation corridors.
This is a preparedness guide, not a live evacuation order. Follow local emergency management, law enforcement and transportation agencies for current routes and instructions.
One week or more before a storm: inspect the vehicle
Do not wait until an evacuation order is issued to begin repairs. Shops become crowded, parts sell out and travel time becomes less predictable.
Check the cooling system
Long periods of low-speed driving reduce natural airflow through the radiator. The electric cooling fans, coolant level, belts, hoses, radiator cap and water pump all need to do their jobs.
With the engine completely cool:
- Check the coolant reservoir level
- Look for wet spots, crusty residue or a sweet smell
- Inspect visible hoses for swelling, cracking or seepage
- Confirm the temperature gauge behaves normally
- Make sure cooling fans cycle when required
Never remove a pressurized radiator cap from a hot engine. If the vehicle has been running hot, losing coolant or showing warning messages, have it diagnosed before relying on it for evacuation.
Test the battery and charging system
Summer heat is hard on batteries. A battery can crank normally for weeks and then fail after repeated short trips, idling and accessory use.
Have the battery and charging system tested if the battery is aging, starting is slow, lights flicker or terminals are corroded. Clean and tighten connections before the storm, not on the shoulder of an evacuation route.
Inspect tires—including the spare
Check pressure when the tires are cold and use the pressure listed on the driver-door placard, not the maximum molded into the sidewall.
Inspect for:
- Cuts, bulges or exposed cords
- Uneven wear
- Embedded objects
- Low tread
- A spare tire that is flat, missing or inaccessible
Verify that the jack, lug wrench and wheel-lock key are present. If the vehicle uses a sealant-and-inflator kit instead of a spare, check the sealant expiration date.
Confirm lights, wipers and washer fluid
Evacuation may involve heavy rain, darkness and slow traffic. Replace torn wiper blades, top off washer fluid and verify headlights, brake lights, turn signals and hazard flashers.
Two to three days before: fuel early and reduce unnecessary load
The National Weather Service advises filling or charging the vehicle when a storm threatens. Do it before long lines form.
For a gasoline or diesel vehicle, avoid running the tank low while waiting for an evacuation decision. For an EV, charge early and identify multiple charging options away from the most congested corridor.
Remove cargo you do not need. Heavy, loose items reduce space and can become dangerous during sudden braking. Pack the essentials low and secure them.
Build an evacuation vehicle kit
A useful kit should solve realistic problems without consuming the entire cargo area.
Roadside and visibility equipment
Carry: reflective triangles or LED warning beacons, a flashlight or headlamp with spare batteries, a tire-pressure gauge, a portable inflator, jumper cables or a properly sized jump starter, basic hand tools, work gloves, a first-aid kit, paper towels and trash bags.
Road flares can create a fire hazard around spilled fuel or dry vegetation. Reflective triangles and electronic beacons are often easier to store and reuse.
Power and communication
Pack at least two ways to charge phones: a vehicle charging cable and adapter, a fully charged power bank, and optionally a 12-volt splitter when several people need power.
Download offline maps before leaving. Write important numbers, addresses and meeting points on paper in case a phone is lost, damaged or unable to connect.
Water, food and medicine
Prepare at least three days of essential supplies for every person, plus pets. Keep daily medication in the passenger compartment rather than buried under luggage.
Do not leave medication, pressurized cans, loose batteries or heat-sensitive electronics in a parked hot vehicle longer than necessary.
Plan the people, not just the route
A route is incomplete unless it accounts for everyone traveling.
Children
Pack water, snacks, wipes, a change of clothes and simple entertainment within reach. Confirm every child restraint is installed correctly before cargo blocks access to the seat.
Older adults and people with disabilities
Account for mobility equipment, refrigerated medicine, oxygen, chargers and extra transfer time. Avoid assuming every fuel stop or shelter will have the same accessibility.
Pets
Bring carriers or restraints, leashes, food, water, bowls, cleanup supplies and vaccination records. Confirm that the destination accepts pets; many public shelters have restrictions.
Choose more than one destination and route
The National Weather Service notes that an evacuation destination does not always need to be hundreds of miles away. The goal is to reach a safe location outside the risk area.
Write down: primary destination, backup destination, primary route, alternate route, a contact outside the affected area, fuel stops well before the tank reaches one-quarter, and overnight options if travel takes much longer than expected.
Do not treat back roads as automatic shortcuts. Low-water crossings, trees, power lines and limited fuel access can make an unfamiliar rural route more dangerous than a congested official route.
During the evacuation
Leave when officials tell you to leave
Waiting can expose you to worse traffic, rising water and fewer open services. Follow official evacuation routes and instructions.
Watch the temperature gauge
Extended idling with the air conditioner operating can expose a marginal cooling system. If the temperature rises above normal:
- Turn off the air conditioner.
- Turn on the heater only if necessary to pull heat from the engine while reaching a safe stopping point.
- Exit traffic safely as soon as possible.
- Shut the engine off and allow it to cool.
- Do not open a hot cooling system.
A vehicle that repeatedly overheats needs repair or a tow—not another bottle of coolant and continued driving.
Never drive through floodwater
Water can hide a washed-out roadway, move a vehicle or enter the engine and electrical system. Turn around rather than guessing at depth.
Keep fuel margin
Slow traffic consumes fuel even when miles are not accumulating. Refuel earlier than you would on a normal road trip.
After the storm
Do not return until officials say the route is open and the area is safe.
Before driving back: check tires for nails and debris, look under the vehicle for leaks, verify lights and wipers, inspect the air intake if the vehicle encountered deep water, confirm fuel availability along the route, and avoid downed lines and standing water.
If water reached the lower doors, cabin, intake or electronics, do not assume the vehicle is safe because it still starts. Arrange a professional inspection.
The best evacuation upgrade is maintenance
A cargo box full of gadgets cannot compensate for a failing tire, weak battery or leaking cooling system. Start with the vehicle itself. Then add the supplies that help you communicate, remain visible and handle a minor roadside problem.
The goal is not to turn a family SUV into a rescue truck. It is to leave early in a dependable vehicle with enough fuel, information and supplies to reach a safe destination.

Should I carry extra gasoline inside the vehicle?
No. Do not carry an unsecured fuel container in the passenger compartment. Fuel storage involves fire, vapor and legal risks. Fuel the vehicle early and follow approved-container and local safety rules when fuel must be transported.
